The main purposes of the project are raising pupils’ and teenagers’ interest in Romania’s recent history as well as determining them to reflect on the totalitarian and repressive nature of the communist regime in Romania. By means of stimulating creativity and individual research, the project intends to develop pupils’ and teenagers’ personal thinking on a historical period that is still imprinted in the evolution and the development of the Romanian society.
The target group is represented by the pupils within the middle and secondary schools functioning under the aegis of the Ministry of Education and Research, both in urban and rural areas.
Main Activities within the Project
The project resides in launching two competitions aiming at answering the question "What does Communism mean to me?". The two sections of the project consist of essay writing and drawing.1. The Essay Contest
The essay contest addresses the pupils within middle and secondary schools. The participants will write an essay attempting at answering the question "What does Communism mean to me?". The text must be 3 to 5 pages long. The agreed font is Times New Roman, size 12, 1.5 lines spacing. Each participant will give a title to his/her essay. Under the title, each contestant will write his/her name, age, form, school name and address, as well as his/her personal address.The deadline for turning in the essays is 1 May 2007. The essays may be sent either on paper support, case in which they should be posted to the IICCR’s address (Str. Matei Voievod nr.18, sector 2, Bucharest) – addressee’s confirmation required – or on electronic support to the e-mail address concurseseu@iiccr.ro. Each participant will automatically be sent an incoming confirmation.
The essays written by middle school pupils will be evaluated separately from those written by secondary school pupils. The jury will be formed of experts within the IICCR as well as of specialists within the Ministry of Education and Research. All pupils taking part in the contest will receive participation diplomas. All diplomas will be sent to the schools involved in the project by post – addressee’s confirmation included – , following that they are distributed to participating pupils.
Winning essays will be published by the IICCR in a volume that will be distributed to the schools functioning under the aegis of the Ministry of Education and Research.
The awards ceremony will be organized by the IICCR in Bucharest.
The IICCR will award the following prizes:

The schools where the winners come from will also be awarded diplomas and a special prize consisting of a flip-chart.
2. The Drawing and Graphic Arts Contest
The drawing and graphic arts contest addresses pupils from 5th to 12th form. The participants will make drawings in pencil, paint or using other materials, as well as collages, posters and computer graphics, which should all attempt at answering the question "What does Communism mean to me?"The smallest agreed size for posters is A4. In the case of computer graphics, the works must have a 240 DPI resolution in order to ensure a good quality printing.
The deadline for turning in all graphic works, either on paper or electronic support, is 1 May 2007. The posters and drawings will be sent by post to the IICCR’s address (Str. Matei Voievod, nr.18, sector 2, Bucharest) – addressee’s confirmation required – , while computer graphics will be sent to the e-mail address concursgrafica@iiccr.ro. Each participant will automatically be sent an incoming confirmation.
Each contestant will write his/her name, age, form, school name and address, as well as his/her personal address on the back of the respective poster/drawing. In the case of electronic works, all these data will be specified within the e-mail that comes with the respective work.
The graphic works accomplished by middle and secondary school pupils will be evaluated separately from those accomplished by the teenagers learning within Fine Arts Secondary Schools. The jury will be formed of experts within the IICCR as well as of specialists within the Ministry of Education and Research. All pupils, teachers and schools taking part in the contest will receive participation diplomas. All diplomas will be sent to the schools involved in the project by post – addressee’s confirmation included – , following that they are distributed to participating pupils.
Winning graphic works will be displayed by the IICCR within an exhibition that is to be organized specially for the award ceremony and possibly within a permanent exhibition, in a location that remains to be established.
The IICCR reserves itself the right to use the graphic works it receives for its future activities and events. Participants must acknowledge the fact that they are to give up their author’s rights to the IICCR, which will remain in possession of their original works.
An awards ceremony for the winning participants will be organized by the IICCR in Bucharest.
