The search and exhumation of Gheorghe Paşca and Gavrilă Rus, murdered by the communist Securitate on February 5th, 1956

The Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and Memory of the Romanian Exile (IICCMER), in partnership with the National History Museum of Transylvania from Cluj-Napoca, organized on April 28th and 29th, 2014, an archaeological investigation in Năsăud city, Bistriţa-Năsăud County. The operation aimed to search, identify and exhume the remains belonging to Gheorghe Paşca and Gavrilă Rus, victims of the Securitate murdered in an armed confrontation near Bichigiu village, Bistriţa-Năsăud County.

The exhumation was undertaken by a specialized team of archaeologists and historians, coordinated by Gheorghe Petrov from the National History Museum of Transylvania in Cluj, together with Marius Oprea, Paul Scrobotă and Horaţiu Groza. The investigations were carried out in the presence of the representatives of the Military Prosecutor’s Office in Cluj, which was informed by IICCMER of this assassination. Members of the Orthodox Church were also present on site.

The activities of the research team were supported in the field by the Economic College in Năsăud (Headmaster – dr. Dorel Bidică, prof. Ştefan Bachiş, administrator – Aurel Ioan Popa) and Vasile Rus, orthodox priest from Nepos village.
