The Online photo collection is the largest database of photos taken during communism, made available to the public through a common initiative of the National Archives of Romania and the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile (IICCMER, former Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes in Romania).
The photographs cover a wide variety of topics. Even though images from illegal communist meetings, from the penitentiaries that detained communist leaders, portraits from their youth etc. are also available, most of the photographs cover the 1944-1989 period: entrance of the Red Army in Bucharest, political events from 1944-1947, visits of communist leaders abroad, personal moments from the lives of Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej and Nicolae Ceauşescu, official visits throughout the country, Communist Party’s conventions, cultural reunions, the Party officials in various contexts, parades, official portraits, public events, etc.
The users should understand that most of the photos included in this database were taken for propaganda purposes. The photos’ captions were taken exactly as they were mentioned at the time the photos were taken.
